Phonic Combo +
Phonic Combo+ is a composite high-performance acoustic ceiling tile from T&R Interior Systems, combining a compounded high-density glasswool absorptive face with a mineral fibre attenuating backer. The two layers are flexibly attached with an air gap between them, delivering both high sound absorption and high sound attenuation in a single tile for demanding commercial environments.

Applications
Suited to environments requiring both strong sound absorption and high plenum attenuation, including airports, open-plan offices, classrooms, boardrooms, museums, performing arts spaces, and commercial interiors meeting Ministry of Education acoustic requirements. The mineral fibre backer also reduces rain noise from metal roofing. Tile flexion between layers creates a cavity that enhances both absorption and isolation performance.
Standards and compliance
Sound absorption tested to AS/ISO 354:2006, alphaW calculated to ISO 11654:1997, NRC calculated to ASTM C423. CAC tested to ASTM E1414-11A. Fire tested to ISO 5660.1-2015, Group 1-S, referenced under NZBC C/VM2 Appendix A. VOC tested to ASTM D519-06. Meets Greenguard Emission Certificate Standard for Green Star rated projects. Exceeds NZ Building Code clause B2 durability requirements.
Frequently asked questions
Does the thicker 45 mm tile outperform the 35 mm tile on all measures?
The 45 mm tile achieves a higher NRC of 0.90 and alphaW of 0.90 compared with the 35 mm tile's NRC 0.85 and alphaW 0.85, meaning it absorbs more sound. However, the 35 mm tile achieves a slightly higher CAC of 42 versus 40 for the 45 mm version. The 35 mm tile is also slightly heavier at 7.5 kg/m2 due to its higher-density face layer.
How does Phonic Combo+ achieve such high attenuation alongside high absorption?
The two layers are flexibly connected with an air gap between them. This allows each layer to flex and vibrate independently, creating a decoupled cavity that provides strong sound absorption at the face while the dense mineral fibre backer resists sound transmission through the plenum.
Is it suitable for education projects that must meet Ministry of Education acoustic standards?
Yes. Phonic Combo+ is designed to meet Ministry of Education acoustic requirements. Its CAC 42 rating and NRC 0.85 address both speech intelligibility within the room and sound transfer between adjacent classrooms through the ceiling plenum.
