R3.1 Bradford SoundScreen Acoustic Insulation Batts
R3.1 Bradford SoundScreen Acoustic Insulation Batts are a high-density glasswool acoustic batt from Bradford Insulation, designed primarily for noise reduction between rooms in internal walls and mid-floor applications. The product is also thermally rated and non-combustible, making it suitable for use in external walls and ceilings where dual thermal and acoustic performance is required.

Applications
Used in internal partition walls and mid-floor cavities to reduce noise transfer between rooms in residential and commercial construction. Also applicable in external walls and ceilings where combined thermal and acoustic performance is required. Must be installed in a cavity matching the product's nominal 110 mm thickness; compression in an undersized cavity is not permitted and risks wall lining damage.
Standards and compliance
Complies with NCC 2022 Volume 1 J4D3(1) and ABCB Housing Provisions Standard 2022 13.2.2(1) for thermal performance. Tested to AS/NZS 4859.1. Non-combustible per AS 1530.1. Fire hazard properties assessed to AS/NZS 1530.3. Sound absorption tested to AS/ISO 354-2006; NRC rated per ASTM C423-90A. Recognised by the National Asthma Council Australia Sensitive Choice program.
Frequently asked questions
What does the R3.1 rating indicate for an acoustic product?
The R3.1 value measures thermal resistance, not acoustic performance. For SoundScreen, acoustic performance is characterised by the NRC of 1.15, measured to AS/ISO 354-2006. The 110 mm thickness contributes to both thermal resistance and sound absorption.
Can SoundScreen R3.1 be compressed into a 90 mm wall cavity?
No. The R3.1 batt is a high-density product at 110 mm nominal thickness and must not be compressed into a cavity smaller than that. Forcing it into an undersized cavity risks deformation or detachment of the wall lining.
Is SoundScreen R3.1 suitable for external walls?
Yes. While designed primarily for internal walls and mid-floors, the product is thermally rated and non-combustible, making it compliant for use in external walls and ceilings as well.
