PSM
PSM is a three-layer acoustic lining material from AMC Mecanocaucho, combining a black polyurethane film facing, an open-cell absorbing polyurethane foam layer, and a 5 kg/m2 heavy viscoelastic mass sheet. It provides both sound absorption and additional mass-based sound reduction, making it suited to industrial enclosures and vehicle cabins where hydrocarbon or moisture exposure is also a concern.
Specifications
- Composition: Black PU film, absorbing polyurethane foam, and 5 kg/m2 heavy viscoelastic mass layer
- Available thicknesses: 15 mm, 25 mm, 40 mm
- Sheet format: 1200 x 1000 mm (8 sheets per box at 15 mm; 5 sheets at 25 mm; 3 sheets at 40 mm)
- Weighted sound reduction index (Rw): 14 dB (15 mm); 17 dB (25 mm); 20 dB (40 mm)
- Self-adhesive option: Available for all thicknesses (A-suffix variants)
Applications
Absorbent lining of soundproof industrial cabins and commercial vehicles in environments where oil, hydraulic fluid, or water may contact the lining surface. The integrated viscoelastic mass layer adds damping to reduce structure-borne vibration transmission through the panel, extending PSM's performance beyond that of the standard PS acoustic foam into applications requiring combined absorption and mass-law sound reduction.
Frequently asked questions
How does PSM differ from PS Black?
PSM adds a 5 kg/m2 heavy viscoelastic mass layer between the PU film and the foam. This extra mass increases the Rw rating at each thickness: 14 dB at 15 mm compared to 12 dB for PS Black at the same thickness, rising to 20 dB at 40 mm compared to 17 dB for PS Black.
What does the viscoelastic mass layer do?
The viscoelastic mass layer dampens panel vibration and increases sound reduction by exploiting the mass law, where added surface mass reduces the transmission of airborne sound. It also dissipates vibrational energy as heat, reducing structure-borne resonance through the enclosure wall.
Is PSM available with a self-adhesive backing?
Yes. All three thicknesses are offered in self-adhesive variants, identified by an A suffix in the product code, for direct bonding to cabin walls and vehicle panels without additional adhesive.
