PIM
PIM is a three-layer acoustic composite panel from AMC Mecanocaucho, pairing a fibreglass facing and absorbing polyurethane foam with a 5 kg/m2 viscoelastic mass layer. It combines the hydrocarbon resistance of fibreglass-faced foam with mass-based damping, making it effective in industrial cabins and mechanical enclosures.
Specifications
- Composition: fibreglass facing, absorbing polyurethane foam, and 5 kg/m2 viscoelastic mass layer
- Available thicknesses: 15 mm, 25 mm, 40 mm
- Sheet format: 1200 x 1000 mm
- Weighted sound reduction index (Rw): 19 dB (15 mm and 25 mm), 21 dB (40 mm)
- Self-adhesive option: available on all thicknesses
Applications
Lining industrial soundproof cabins, engine enclosures, and machinery housings where exposure to hydrocarbons or oils is expected. The fibreglass facing resists chemical degradation, while the viscoelastic mass layer increases surface mass and dampens structural vibrations. PIM functions primarily as a sound isolator and damping treatment rather than an acoustic absorber.
Frequently asked questions
How does PIM compare to PI?
Both use a fibreglass facing and polyurethane foam. PIM adds a 5 kg/m2 viscoelastic mass layer, which raises the Rw from 18-19 dB (PI) to 19-21 dB and adds mechanical damping for vibrating panels.
What role does the viscoelastic mass layer play?
The mass layer adds surface weight, which resists airborne sound transmission, and converts vibrational energy into heat through damping. This is particularly useful when panels or enclosure walls are themselves vibrating sources.
Is PIM suitable for wet or oily environments?
Yes. The fibreglass facing resists damage from hydrocarbons and oils, making PIM appropriate for engine bays and industrial environments where standard foam facings would degrade.
