Thermotec Closed Cell Sealant Backing Rod is a pre-formed LDPE foam backer designed for joint sealing applications in construction. The round profile promotes correct sealant shaping, reducing the volume of sealant needed and supporting optimum joint movement in horizontal and vertical joints.

Applications
Suitable for horizontal and vertical construction joints, isolation joints in brickwork and blockwork, internal wall joints, window sealing, and general draught-proofing. Compatible with all leading sealants. The round profile controls sealant geometry to deliver correct two-point adhesion and maximum movement accommodation.

Why use a backing rod before applying sealant?
A backing rod controls the depth and profile of the sealant bead, ensuring the correct hourglass cross-section for joint movement. It also reduces sealant consumption by filling dead space in the joint.
Will the backing rod absorb water if the joint is exposed to moisture?
No. The closed cell LDPE foam structure prevents moisture absorption, making it suitable for wet-area and exterior joint applications.
What diameter should I select?
Choose a diameter 25 to 50 per cent larger than the joint width so the rod compresses slightly on insertion, holding it firmly in place before sealant is applied.
